Cross-sell recommendations should help the shopper complete the purchase they are already constructing. A cable for a device, cushions for a sofa, care products for a material, or a coordinated garment can be useful. A random popular product is not a cross-sell.

The phrase covers several different jobs. Frequently bought together, complete the look, product-page accessories, and cart cross-sells use different context and require different evidence. Treating them as one strategy produces shelves that look plausible but cannot be defended.

Similar products answer “What else could I buy instead?” Cross-sells answer “What else helps this purchase work?” That distinction changes the candidate set, heading, placement, and measurement. Mixing both in one shelf forces the shopper to decode whether each card is a replacement or an addition.

A complement can complete a technical system, a practical task, an aesthetic set, or a basket. Name which kind of completion the shelf supports. If the team cannot write that sentence, it cannot judge whether the products are right.

Order history can reveal real basket relationships, but co-occurrence can have several causes: a promotion, a bundle, a dominant product, a seasonal event, or a genuine complement. It does not prove technical compatibility, and it should not overrule a known incompatibility.

Catalogue relationships help when order history is sparse. They work only when the fields encode the relationship the shopper needs. A shared vendor or collection may be useful for style, but weak for replacement parts. Merchant curation remains appropriate when the relationship is important, knowable, and stable enough to maintain.

Visual coherence is not enough. Check availability, price range, market, audience, dimensions, size, season, and whether the products can realistically be purchased together. A beautiful card row that contains unavailable sizes or conflicting specifications is presentation without utility.
